Thetford A Tourists Guide - The Historic Royal Home of Boudica and King James: Thetford is a small town which is nestled amongst the forest parks that share its name and it is found on the main A11 route between Norwich and Cambridge. Providing a home to a population of approximately 25,000 people, Thetford is a vibrant market town having a story extending back close to 2,000 years.

Boudica or Boadicea, was the celebrated Queen of the Iceni by her marriage to King Prasutagus in the mid first century. Their tribe, the Iceni, lived in the area of England we today call East Anglia, their seat of power was in and around the forests of Thetford. From this area they carried out attacks on the Roman invaders till their activities were quelled by order of the Roman Emperor. Thetford continued to be an important town even after the demise of Boudica and it has been constantly occupied to some extent since then. In 1979 a hoard of treasure was unearthed not far from the town that dated back to the Fourth Century AD. This hoard of Celtic inscribed, pendants, necklaces, gold finger rings and other jewellery is on display in the British Museum in Bloomsbury London and is deemed one of the most significant finds in Great Britain.

Bridge over the Little Ouse - - 1028483The town stands at the conjunction of 2 rivers, the River Little Ouse and the River Thet after which it was named. It was a significant crossing point for travellers needing to venture into East Anglia and the Thet ford crossing was adopted as the title of the town which grew up here to help provide for the weary and hungry travellers. These days the town is still a fitting resting point for travellers on the A11 and provides an array of cafes and eateries to choose from if you wish to avoid using the motorway style services and fast food outlets found on the service areas and roundabouts of the main Norwich to Cambridge road.

The breathtaking stone buildings in Thetford town centre include for example the delightful King's House which in the seventeenth century was used as the royal palace of James the First. The building and its substantial gardens were awarded to the people of Thetford by George Wild Staniforth (a retired Yorkshire businessman) who wanted to make certain there was a location which all towns' people could benefit from. The Town Council use the main building whilst the King's House Gardens are accessible to everyone and also are a favourite location for wedding photos in the discerningly designed gardens. Another fine building is located on White Hart Street and called the Ancient House Museum, it's a classic oak-framed Tudor merchant's house which now has on display reproductions of the above mentioned Thetford Treasure Hoard and additional exhibits concerning local history.

Market days are Saturdays and Tuesdays in the town and the stalls set up in Market Place entice thousands of shoppers each week who go there to purchase produce from farmers and other sellers. Parking isn't easy on market day, so ensure you roll up very early to get your parking spot. The location of the markets have stayed unaltered since Thetford was granted its market charter in the seventeenth century and as looking around at the timber framed buildings and Norfolk flint walls you will actually be aware of the history of the town all around you. If ever you visit on Market Day and want to get away from the spending, you will want to check out the Old Fire Station in Cage Ln for an old fashioned experience. The BBC comedy show, "Dad's Army" set in the imaginary Walmington-on-Sea, but do you realize that some of the exterior locations were recorded in and near to the town of Thetford. The Old Fire Station nowadays houses the superb Dad's Army Museum with numerous exhibits from the much loved show and it also puts on guided tours of Thetford including the opportunity to sit alongside Captain Mainwaring himself, or in fact a statue of the character that was unveiled in 2007.
