Thetford A Tourists Guide - The Historic Royal Home of Boudica and King James the First: Thetford is a medium-sized town which is nestled between the forest parks that bear its name and it is found on the key A11 route between Norwich and Cambridge. With a population of just under twenty two thousand residents, Thetford is an appealing market town having a heritage going back almost 2 millennia.

Boudica or Boadicea, was the famous Queen of the Iceni by her marriage to King Prasutagus in the first century. Their tribe lived in the English area we now call East Anglia, and the seat of their power was around the Thetford Forest. It was from there that they engaged in sorties on the Romans until their activities were subdued on orders of the Roman Emperor. Thetford was still a significant town even with the fall of its King and Queen and it has been in constant occupation in some form since then. In the late 1970s a hoard of treasure was dug up near the town that had been lost since the fourth century. That array of Celtic gold finger rings, spoons, pendants and additional jewellery is on display in the British Museum and is amongst the most valuable finds in Britain.

Bridge over the Little Ouse - - 1028483The town of Thetford is located on the joining of 2 rivers, the Little Ouse and the Thet (which it was named after). It was a key crossing for travellers looking to venture into East Anglia and the Thet ford crossing was implemented as the name of the town that emerged there in order to cater for the hungry and tired travellers. Nowadays the town continues to be a useful resting place for travellers on the A11 and provides a range of eateries and coffee shops to choose from so that you can stay away from the fast food outlets and motorway type services found on the service areas and roundabouts of the main road that links Cambridge and Norwich.

The marvellous stone structures in Thetford town centre include the attractive King's House which in the 17th century was used as the royal residence of King James I. The substantial gardens and the palace were given to the citizens of Thetford by George Wild Staniforth (a retired businessman) who desired to guarantee that there was an area that all the people of Thetford could benefit from. The main building is used by the Town Council whilst the King's House Gardens are open to everybody and are a favourite spot for wedding photos in the stunningly designed gardens. One other terrific building is set on White Hart St in the shape of the Ancient House Museum, it is a historic oak-framed Tudor merchant's house that now has on display replicas of the formerly discussed Thetford Treasure Hoard and more displays regarding the local history of the area.

Tuesdays and Saturdays are market days in the town and stalls that are showing their goods on Market Place bring in many hundreds of shoppers weekly who go there to stock up on the freshest produce from local farmers and other traders. Car parking is problematic on market day, so make sure that you arrive early to reserve a car parking spot. The position of the market has remained the same ever since Thetford was granted its charter to have a market in the 1800s and as gazing around at the oak framed buildings and Norfolk flint walls you can almost be aware of the history of the town all around you. If you do visit on Market Day and want an escape from the retail therapy, you will want to take a look at Cage Lane and the Old Fire Station for an old fashioned treat. The BBC TV comedy, "Dad's Army" set in the fictional town of Walmington-On-Sea, however it's a fact that some of the external locations were shot in and close to Thetford. The Old Fire Station in Cage Lane now houses the excellent Dad's Army Museum with all sorts of exhibits from the much loved TV show and it also puts on guided tours of the town that include a chance to sit alongside Captain Mainwaring himself, or actually the statue of his character which was unveiled in 2007.

With a jampacked calendar abundant in events for true petrol heads, it is a great day out and only a few minutes from Thetford town centre.

As a rural area, Thetford experiences some of the UK's darkest skies which makes it a perfect location for stargazing.
