Thetford A Tourists Guide - The Historic Royal Home of Boudica and King James the First: Thetford is a medium-sized town which is located amongst the forest parks that share its name and it is positioned on the main A11 highway between Norwich and Cambridge. With a population of just under twenty two thousand inhabitants, it is a bustling market town having a heritage extending back approximately 2,000 years.

Boudica or Boadicea, was the celebrated Queen of the Iceni through marriage to King Prasutagus in the first century AD. Their tribe lived in the area of Great Britain which we now call East Anglia, and the seat of their power was in the Thetford Forest. It was from here that they carried out sorties on the Romans till the time their capers were terminated on orders of the Roman Emperor. Thetford was still an important town despite the demise of its Queen and King and has been ceaselessly occupied in some form since then. In the late 1970s a treasure hoard was discovered not far from the town which hails from the the fourth century. The hoard of Celtic spoons, pendants, gold finger rings and various jewellery is today on permanent display in the London's British Museum and is amongst the most significant finds in Great Britain.

Bridge over the Little Ouse - - 1028483Thetford lies at the conjunction of two rivers, the River Little Ouse and the River Thet (which it was named after). It was a critical crossing for travellers needing to venture into England's eastern regions and the Thet ford crossing (ford) was adopted as the title of the town which grew up there to supply the exhausted and thirsty travellers. These days the town is still a fitting stopping point for those driving using the A11 road offering a variety of cafes and restaurants from which to pick if you would like avoid the motorway style services and fast food outlets found on the roundabouts and services of the main road that links Cambridge and Norwich.

The marvellous stone buildings in the town centre include the charming King's House at one time the royal palace of James the First. The considerable gardens and the house were given to the residents of Thetford by George Staniforth who desired to ensure there was an area that all the towns' people could benefit from. The main building is utilized by the Town Council and the King's House Gardens are open to all and tend to be a favourite location for wedding photographs in the beautifully landscaped gardens. One other fine structure is based on White Hart St in the shape of the Ancient House Museum, it is a classic oak-framed Tudor merchant's house that now holds reproductions of the formerly discussed Thetford Treasure and various displays regarding local history.

Tuesdays and Saturdays are market days in the town and stalls positioned in Market Place bring in many hundreds of visitors every week who go there to purchase the freshest produce from farmers and other sellers. Vehicle parking isn't easy on market day, so ensure you turn up very early to obtain a parking place. The position of the markets have remained unaltered ever since the town was accorded its market town charter in the 1800s and as you look around at the oak framed buildings and flint walls you will pretty much feel the history of the town all around you. Should you make up your mind to come along on Market Day and require a break from the buying frenzy, perhaps you should visit the Old Fire Station in Cage Ln for an old fashioned experience. The BBC TV comedy, "Dad's Army" set in the imaginary town of Walmington-On-Sea, but are you aware that the majority of the external locations were recorded in and close to the town of Thetford. The Old Fire Station in Cage Ln these days houses the fabulous Dad's Army Museum with lots of exhibits from the original show and it also puts on guided tours of the town that include an opportunity to sit beside Captain Mainwaring himself, or at least a statue of his character that was unveiled in 2007.

Should you prefer your spare time to be somewhat more exhilarating then merely sixteen kilometres to the east of the town is Snetterton Circuit. Here you'll be able to take part in race days, supercar experiences and test out your proficiency with both 2 and 4 wheeled cars on the high speed track. With a jam-packed calendar chock-full of events for true petrol heads, it is a great day trip and just a quick trip from Thetford.

Being a rural community, the town experiences some of England's blackest skies which makes it a preferred pick of location for fans of star gazing. The Autumn Equinox Festival of Astronomy is held near Thetford every year and attracts a large number of amateur and professional astronomers because of the lack of light pollution and easy access from anywhere in the UK. Also referred to as the "Thetford Star Party" it can be a great way to learn more about astronomy from experts and watch the wonders of the Universe.
