Thetford A Travellers Guide - The Ancient Royal Home of King James I and Boudica: Thetford is a small town that is placed within the forest parks which bear its name and it is positioned on the major A11 route between Cambridge and Norwich. Providing a home to a population of approximately twenty two thousand people, Thetford is a bustling market town having a story extending back around 2 millennia.

Boadicea or Boudica, was the legendary Queen of the Iceni through her marriage to King Prasutagus in the 1st century. The Iceni tribe lived in the area of England we now call East Anglia, and the seat of their power was around the Thetford Forest. It was from here that they conducted assaults upon the Romans up to the point their actions were quelled by order of the Roman Emperor. Thetford remained an important town in spite of the fall of their King and Queen and it has been constantly occupied in some form or other since this time. In 1979 a treasure hoard was discovered near to the town that dates from the fourth century. That collection of Celtic pendants, rings, inscribed and other jewellery is on permanent display in the British Museum (London) and is regarded as one of the most important finds in the country.

These days the town is still being used as a favorable stopping point for motorists using the A11 and offers various restaurants and coffee shops from which to choose should you wish to steer clear of the fast food outlets and motorway type services that line the roundabouts and services of the main Norwich to Cambridge road.

The gorgeous stone buildings of the centre of town include the attractive King's House which was once the royal residence of King James I. The palace and its considerable gardens were awarded to the inhabitants of Thetford by George Wild Staniforth who wished to ensure there was a location which all people of Thetford could benefit from. The key building is used by the Town Council whilst the King's House Gardens are open to all and also are a popular position for wedding photographs within the beautifully designed gardens. Yet another fine building is set on White Hart St in the shape of the Ancient House Museum, it's an old oak-framed Tudor merchant's house which now showcases replicas of the above mentioned Thetford Treasure Hoard and more displays regarding the local history of the town.
